On the Eighth Day of Conference tourneys, the Buffet gave to me...

West Coast Titans Clash
An Upside-down Sun Belt
Farewell to Iona
PAC 12 Bottoms Out
MAC in Cleveland
The Pioneers Live On
Ohio State Rises
And the XII Days hit Week 2

All you did was weakened a country day, Kaffee. That's all you did.

That's the Buffet's official review of Sunday, March 4, 2012. The only day that's also a command not involving ordinals. And the day we lost Iona & Middle Tennessee State from our NCAA Tournament lives. But given Sunday's results, maybe we'll get a sweet NIT matchup where Momo Jones makes his return to McKale Center to lead Iona against the Wildcats.

Well, it was a weekend of sighs of relief. Oral Roberts exhaled when the ref mistook a tomahawk chop for a clean block. The city of Chicago exhaled when Bruce Weber not only saw the writing on the wall, but also all but read it out loud (Good luck Carbondale!). Texas exhaled when the final buzzer sounded and everyone not named J'Covan Brown could come out of hiding. And the entire Waiting Line (which now deeply includes Arizona) exhaled when Murray State held serve and Creighton held serve for Wichita St.

Want to know where no sigh of relief happened? The West Coast. Other than Alexis Wangmene, and the Buffet sends our best to a good kid and hopes his wrist recovers quickly and he can have a career playing ball somewhere in the world, but, other than him, did anyone have a worse weekend than the Pac12 Waiting Liners? Washington loses at UCLA. California loses at Stanford. Arizona loses at, gulp, Arizona State? It's hard to write the words "loses at Arizona State" without including a question mark.

Now week 2 begins, as games come fast and furious, with the big guns, a couple mid-majors, and then our sometimes forgotten friends in the South and the West, and in one case a combination of the two.

The Schedule
Colonial Athletic Association
CHAMPIONSHIP - the one everyone wanted:
1 Drexel v. 2 Virginia Commonwealth - 7pm ET, ESPN
The two locked up only once this season, at the Dashkalakis (say that 5 times fast) Center in Philly, and Drexel came away with a 64-58 win. In that came, Frantz Massenant scored a career high 24 points, including 4-4 for 3pt range. The game featured no team leading by more than 7, a lead number that was actually held by VCU, who led 43-46 with 15 minutes to play until they had a 5 minute scoring drought. The game was tied, until 4 quick points gave Drexel a 57-53 lead they never relinquished, as VCU could get no closer than 2. Derrick Thomas added 10 points, as the only other Dragon in double figures. Chris Fouch, steady as usual off the bench, had 8 pts, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. For VCU, Juvonte Reddic had 15 points, 8 rebounds a steal and a block, and Bradford Burgess had 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Waiting Line implications: Both teams will be strongly considered, Drexel's incredible win steak cannot be ignored, they have won 19 in a row, and 25 of 26. The problem is who those 19 are against. They played the 220nd ranked non-confernce schedule, and they SOS actually got worse in CAA play. They have 1, count them, 1 top 50 win and if they are in need of an at-large bid, that means they will have lost tomorrows a game, and in some ways, given back the home win over VCU that comprises their entire resume. The Colonial isn't stacked this year, ranking only 15th among conferences, so even the "Regular season champion" card (that's a card you don't want to play yet - Readers, comment section, who's quote is that?) isn't the trump you'd want it to be. Plus 3 100+ losses, and the Buffet just thinks that when you have more bad losses than good wins, and a resume void of wins between 1-48; 50-80. And were not even all that competitive in their losses to tournament contending - lost by 14 vs. Virginia and by 13 @Saint Joe's. Now, it can be argued they were without 4th leading scorer and talented returnee Chris Fouch for the beginning of the season and even v. Saint Joe's and Delaware he was still working himself into things. But this is their 4th leading scorer, not Danny Granger, and even so, I can't disclaim a team from losing to Norfolk St because their 4th leading scorer was gone.

VCU is a bit more interesting. Their best win is barely better than Drexel's (46 versus 48) but they have wins over the MAC champs Akron (62), and the BB win over UNI (73) - plus a real good show in Tuscaloosa where VCU led Albama 60-59 with 4 minutes left, before an 8-0 gained control for the Tide. they do have a pair of ugly losses, including a loss at home to Georgia State and to Georgia Tech. Although, part of that was a team trying to rediscover its mojo have losing so much talent from its Final 4 squad from a year ago. Their road record is nice 10-3, their computer #s are solid: top 50 in RPI and KenPom's rating - the problem they face, is the same problem of all mid-major squads: the tournament just didn't provide an opportunity to expand their win reservoir. They added a 2nd win against George Mason, effectively erasing the Feb 14 buzzer beater loss from their books. It's just that when you finish your season early, you want to be squarely in and forced out by unpredictable results. But if you're questionably in the Last 4 in/First 4 Out before any tournament have started, that means trouble.

Bottom line: The more you examine, the more it just feels like a one-bid conference, VCU is a good team, and they are likely better than/more deserving than some of the big boys that will get those final slots offered to them - but, that's just the reality, and in light of that, the Buffet thinks that Drexel has no path to an at-large at this put, but that VCU could, although they'd be better served to just win and take the decision-making process out of their occasion. VCU was in the latest Buffetology, but remember, Buffetologies are designed as if the committee was selecting then and there, there are no predictive elements, and we're just not sure VCU can survive another loss, even if Drexel would be considered a "good" loss, VCU just needs to buffer its resume, potentially...

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
CHAMPIONSHIP
2 Loyola v. 4 Fairfield, 7pm ET, ESPN2
With the Iona upset, things are now wide open, and wide open thy name is Loyola (Maryland). This final is the rubber match, each team won on the other's floor. Most recently, Fairfield in the midst of a 5 game winning streak beat Loyola 68-51, and Loyola knocked of the Stags 66-63 in the second week of January. Erik Etherly averaged 17 points and 9.5 rebounds in the 2 games and Robert Olson had 16 for the Greyhounds. Rakim Sanders 15 points and 6 rebounds while Maurice Barrow went 8-8.

Mid-American Conference
12 Northern Illinois @ 5 Eastern Michigan, 7pm ET, mac-sports.com (series: EMich 2-0)
11 Central Michigan @ 6 Bowling Green, 7pm ET, mac-sports.com (series: Bowling Green 1-0)
10 Miami (Ohio) @ 7 Toledo, 7pm ET, mac-sports.com (series: Toledo 1-0)S1
9 Ball State @ 8 Western Michigan, 7pm ET, mac-sports.com (series 1-1)

Southern Championship
S1 Davidson v. N3 Western Carolina, 9pm ET, ESPN2
Rematch of January 12 game, that Davidson dominated from open to close, leading by as many as 27 points. In that game, Jake Cohen had 26 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 blocks, JP Kuhlman had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists while Clint Mann had 11 points and 4 rebounds and Chris Czerapowicz had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks off the bench in a 88-67 win. Harouna Mutombo went for 17 and 8 and Brandon Boggs had 13 and 3.

Summit League
1 Oral Roberts v. 4 Western Illinois, 7pm, Local TV/FCS - Central (series: 2-0 ORU)
2 South Dakota St v. 6 Southern Utah, 7pm, Local TV/FCS - Central (SDSU: 2-0)

Sun Belt
5 North Texas v. 9 Arkansas State, 7pm ET, ESPN3/Full Court
3 Denver v. 7 Western Kentucky, 930pm ET, ESPN3/Full Court

West Coast
CHAMPIONSHIP
1 St. Mary's v. 2 Gonzaga
Battle of the WCC titans. A big time rivalry, where for the first time since 2000, Gonzaga did not win or share the WCC, and one of the country's best rivalries that no one talks about, gets a 2012 Act III. The teams split home and home, Gonzaga getting beat up by St Mary's in mid-January in Moraga, and then Gonzaga perhaps reminding the Gaels, that they might not be the impending 2012 champs, but they are still the big dog in the yard, beating SMC 73-59 in Spokane. Matthew Dellavedova averaged 23 points and 5 assists, Brad Waldow had 13.5 pts and 6.5 rebounds. Kevin Pangos averaged 19.5 pts, Elias Harris had 13.5 and 10. The interesting tale will be how the absence of Stephen Holt impacts the way St. Mary's defends Gonzaga and the overall depth/chemistry of the once high-flying Gaels.

Waiting Line... implications are next to nil - both teams are in, it is merely which seed line between 6-8 that the committee deems appropriate. St. Mary's has the most to lose, because the committee needs to evaluate them without Stephen Holt, and so far they've only lost to LMU, Middle Tenn St, blew out Portland and struggled twice with San Francisco, this would their signature post-Holt win.

2012 FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament
All Roads Lead to Cleveland
march 5: Campus sites
march 7-10: Quicken Loans Arena, "the Q,: capacity: 20,562
MAC Madness at Q

The conference that brought* you Gary Trent, Wally Szczerbiak, Tim Pollitz, Hamman Quaintance, and, of course, the Great Turner Battle brings you the 2012 version of their tournament today. Full action doesn't really get started until Wednesday, but the Buffet preview starts NOW

*Enigma of the day - when did "from the producers of" become such a great selling point? I mean, to I really care that the guy who was integrally involved the creation of a movie is now only tangentially related to this new one? So, you're saying a guy who wrote, directed, came up with the concept for, executed, etc. that one movie that you absolutely loved, did none of those things for this one (or else, you wouldn't have to point out his involvement, he would in fact BE INVOLVED)? I feel if people really thought about it, the promo would be having the opposite effect - it is like saying, we know you really enjoy his/her work, but he/she didn't really work on this, but come see it anyway!

The East/War played itself out until the end of the year, with Bowling Green by 4 points in the regular season finale at Buffalo with a shot to have 5 teams in the West finish with a better record than Eastern division champion Eastern Michigan. Does EMU put a banner up in their arena for being the "MAC Eastern Division Champion"

A relative weak year for the MAC, only 1 top 25 win for anyone (Bowling Green over Temple) and just 1 more versus the top 50 (Kent St @ West Virginia) - it's not until you dip into the 60s and Belmont before the conference start piling up wins of any kind, and truly only 3 total versus teams who are worthy of at-large consideration (Temple, W.Virginia, Mississippi St). But here's the thing, they're not playing the rest of the country tonight - they're playing each other, and in that respect, this should be a hugely unpredictable time in Cleveland. 3-4-5-6-7: that's the losses in order from #1 seed to #6 (two teams have 7 conference losses). Which means this could go in a lot of different ways.

Akron is your regular season champ, they started the conference season at a smoking hot 12-1, before facing the teams who will be seeded #2 and #3 and reality catching up a bit. Up until that point, they had an OK resume, winning at Mississippi St and Marshall, and defeating Ohio (who some people have still under consideration), and a couple of tough losses (VCU, @Oral Roberts) that made them on some people's at-large radar. But, the wheels came off in getting swept by Buffalo and losing @Ohio pretty soundly. They can only hope some mojo was restored in their season ending 61-55 road win at Kent State, the conference #4 seed.

Buffalo had their swoon a bit earlier, dropping 3 straight - @Kent, v. Ohio (with a 21-point bracket buster loss to South Dakota St in between), but otherwise lost just two other conference games - a road loss to Miami (OH) and the 2nd matchup with Ohio, who just had their number. Their best not-MAC win was Dayton, but they played a great OT tilt that resulted in a 2-point loss at Temple. They have won 3 straight coming into tournament play. What Buffalo does well is get on the boards, currently ranked 11th in the country in rebounding margin. Also, watch for the continued rise of Mitchell Watt, the senior from Goodyear, Arizona has raised his game considerably, averaging 22.5 points over his last 4 games.**

**Monday morning Buffet contest: The read who can go to this web page: http://mac-sports.com/Championships/BasketballM.aspx and correctly identifying what doesn't belong, will win a free subscription to the Buffet for the 2012-13 CBB season.

Ohio who had a pair of lengthy winning streaks, 6 and 4, sandwiched around all road losses, sweeping Buffalo, and splitting with Akron and Kent. They were powered by some solid road wins (Marshall, Northern Iowa, and Buffalo) and the fact that avoided any single MAC team putting a 2nd L on them.

Kent State was trending in the wrong direction heading to Cleveland, losing 4 of 5 after a 7 game winning streak had them near the top of the conference. They began the season with a huge win at West Virginia, but they couldn't sustain it, struggling on the road otherwise (losses at Utah St, Bowling Green and Miami OH on top of 3 other conference road losses), they did beat Ohio 76-71 in the midst of their losing streak, so their ability to take out those at the top persists.

Bowling Green host Temple and took them out, they were however swept by both Akron & Buffalo, and lost to an unimaginable group of RPI poison for a team getting the Buffet preview.

Eastern Michigan benefited from the MAC fortuitous continental divide this year, having to face the West's best only 1 each, losing to 5 of the 6 teams, with only a 13 point home win over Ohio in the middle of an up and down season.

The Buffet picks: Buffalo. Akron was the standard, but there's something about them when the face Buffalo and their shaky ground as a whole that points the arrow towards the Bulls.

Upset Special: It is almost a guarantee that the MAC champ will come from the top 4/5 seeds, and predicting one of them just doesn't feel like an upset. But, so we'll go with keep an eye on Eastern Michigan - this is a division champion who gets no respect, just the mantra a hoops team can use to pull tournament upsets.
